Audio: waveforms, playback and renaming

How sound is previewed, how it plays, and the one thing a rename changes.

01The waveform preview

Audio has no picture, so we draw one: a waveform card showing the shape of the sound, its length, channels and sample rate, with the asset's name across it. That card is what appears in the grid.

An audio asset's preview card.

02Playing audio

Open an audio asset and the waveform becomes the scrub bar. Click or drag anywhere on it to move the playhead. Below it are play and pause, five seconds back and forward, the speed, and volume — the same controls as the video player.

03Renaming

Because the name is drawn into the waveform card, renaming an audio asset leaves the old name on the picture. When you rename one, we ask whether to re-render the preview. Answer yes and the card is redrawn with the new name; answer no and nothing changes but the title.

You can re-render at any time from More actions in the inspector — you do not have to decide at the moment you rename.

04Searchable copies

Some formats cannot be played or analysed directly in a browser. When that happens we can make a private MP3 copy for search and playback. Your original is kept exactly as you uploaded it and is what you get when you download.
